Squishy Robotics is a new startup based in Berkeley, CA that focuses on developing novel, shapeshifting soft robots called tensegrity robots, built on research from UC Berkeley’s Emergent Space Tensegrities lab in collaboration with NASA Ames. We specialize in developing low-cost, compliant, and robust robotic systems to help reduce risk to first responders during emergency response, disaster relief, and search and rescue applications.

Squishy Robotics is currently seeking highly motivated interns to help our company grow towards our vision of delivering novel and impactful technology to first responders. Internships include regular mentoring/professional development opportunities in both technology and business development with esteemed UC Berkeley faculty and doctoral students, along with the opportunity to be part of the innovative ecology at SkyDeck, UC Berkeley’s official start-up accelerator!

Mechanical Engineer: Design next generation tensegrity robots using 3D CAD software.  Prototype various designs using cutting edge rapid prototyping techniques.  Evaluate the systems through controlled experiments (e.g., drop-testing robot from an aerial vehicle), and document the testing results in detail.

Specific Duties:

  • Design robot systems using 3D CAD
  • Generate mechanical drawings with proper GD&T for machining
  • Machine and fabricate hardware prototypes
  • Perform cost analysis on systems for prototyping and manufacturing phases
  • Select purchased components by specifications and testing
  • Develop system test plans and perform verification testing
  • Assist with the development of User Manual Documentation.

Job Level: Intern

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (or currently pursuing with relevant experience)
  • 2 plus years’ experience in mechanical system design (could be coursework or other internships)
  • Extensive 3D CAD experience designing moving mechanical systems with SolidWorks
  • Experience with rapid prototyping tools such as laser cutting, 3D printing, etc.
  • Skills with inspection and measurement tools
  • Hands-on experience with product development from concept to production release
  • Experience with engineering materials, with a history of properly selecting materials that meet design requirements
  • FEA (Finite Element Analysis) simulation experience is a plus
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills
  • Highly organized and inquisitive

Electrical/ Mechatronics Engineer: Design and assemble scalable PCBs for mass production of next generation tensegrity robots. Focus is largely on reliable and robust electronic hardware with interesting design constraints for operation in harsh, rugged environments (e.g. disaster sites, chemical leaks, etc.). Evaluate the systems through controlled experiments (e.g., drop-testing robot from an aerial vehicle), and document the testing results in detail.

Specific Duties:

  • PCB (printed circuit board) design for mass production
  • Building prototype circuitry and test equipment
  • Collaborate with mechanical and software engineers (e.g., work with actuators, motors and electronics for future hardware designs)
  • PCB fabrication and assembly
  • Develop system test plans and perform verification testing

Job Level: Intern

Education/Experience:

  • Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Mechatronic Engineering (or currently pursuing) or with equivalent experience
  • Extensive experience in PCB (printed circuit board) and PCA (printed circuit assembly) design and manufacturing is required (Eagle or similar software)
  • Wireless communication (Bluetooth LE, 3G/4G LTE, WiFi, IEEE 802.15.4, LoRa, etc.) is a plus
  • Low-level firmware development
  • Low-power circuit design
  • Programming experience in C/C++ and Python is a plus
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills
  • Highly organized and inquisitive

Social Media and Communications Manager: Promoting awareness of company by cultivating social media presence through various avenues – company website, Facebook page, Twitter, Youtube, etc. Necessary skills include graphics design and web development. Interacting with and responding to outside public through email and engendering outreach (e.g., organizing demonstrations, talks, flyers, stickers, etc.)

Specific Duties:

  • Develop front-facing company website
  • Graphic design, videos and animations
  • Building and expanding company presence through social networking
  • Track and present analytics across different social media platforms to guide future trends and company practices
  • Building relationships and communicating to public and clients
  • Search Engine Optimization and online advertising

Job Level: Intern

Education/Experience:

  • Excellent communicator with strong creative sense
  • Extensive experience in website development and maintenance
  • Strong knowledge of social media platforms and experience as an influencer, with background in managing and distributing content across Facebook, Twitter, Youtube
  • Knowledge of Photoshop or some image editing software preferred
  • Videography skills is a plus

Software Engineer: Building robotic system software stack – from programming low-level embedded microcontroller to UI design. Emphasis is on reliable and efficient code for wireless communication utilizing ROS (Robot Operating System) infrastructure.

Specific Duties:

  • Programming embedded microcontrollers
  • Building wireless communication framework using ROS
  • Excellent documentation and code management
  • Collaborate with mechanical and electrical/mechatronic engineers
  • Work on a project team to develop products on schedule with desired quality and cost

Job Level: Intern

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science (or currently pursuing) or equivalent experience
  • Proficient in C/C++ and Python

UI Designer: Designing and testing an intuitive user interface for operating and interacting with the robot, which may include software UI such as Android and/or Apple apps or physical hand-held controller. Deliverables should be motivated by human-centered design methods such as user studies and interviews.

Specific Duties:

  • UI design (e.g., apps, physical controller)
  • Human-robot interaction background research (e.g., interviewing potential users such as firefighters)
  • Using wireless communication framework using ROS
  • Excellent documentation and code management
  • Collaborate with mechanical and electrical/mechatronic/software engineers
  • Work on a project team to develop products on schedule with desired quality and cost

Controls Engineer: Developing control policies for dynamic tensegrity locomotion. Emphasis includes creating energy-efficient robust controllers that work in a variety of difficult terrain (e.g., inclined slopes, uneven surface, etc.). Other pluses include intelligent state estimation, sensor fusion, machine learning, path planning, and variable stiffness optimization for aerial drone drop scenarios.

Specific Duties:

  • Developing feedback control policy for dynamic rolling locomotion of many-degree-of-freedom tensegrity systems with high-dimensional state- and action- spaces
  • Working closely with mechanical, electrical, and software team by using controls and simulation results to motivate design decisions for sensing and actuation
  • Developing intelligent risk-aware path planning in uncertain environments
  • Developing control policies for aerial drop scenarios

Job Level: Intern

Education/Experience:

  • Master’s degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering (or currently pursuing) with a focus in Controls, or equivalent experience
  • Familiar with model-based optimal control (i.e., model predictive control)
  • Very proficient with MATLAB
  • Past experience working with ROS and robotics is a plus
  • Tensorflow (or equivalent) and machine learning experience is a plus
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills
